Who & What

Safe Omaha Streets (SOS) is a grassroots Think&Do Tank dedicated to making Omaha’s streets safer for ALL road users, including drivers and riders, passengers, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Our Story

In 2022, we decided to start SOS after years of becoming more and more disillusioned and distressed by the unsafe driving conditions in Omaha.

FATAL CRASHES ON OMAHA STREETS

So far, in 2024, there have been 7 fatalities on our roads. In 2023, there were 27 fatalities on Omaha’s streets. 2022: 41 fatalities 2021: 35 fatalities 2020: 39 fatalities 2019: 30 fatalities 2018: 38 fatalities.

IMPAIRED DRIVING

Including drugs and/or alcohol. Omaha Police Department made over 1,300 arrests for Driving Under the Influence in 2020.

How You Can Help Now

You can start by following the rules of the road and being a safe-driving model for others in our city.

  • Enforcement in Omaha includes a complaint-based process, which means the City and the Police Department want to know where YOU see dangerous driving in Omaha.

To report dangerous intersections or equest enforcement at local, dangerous roads/intersections:

    - Contact the Mayor’s Hotline (402.444.5555 or hotline@cityofomaha.org), the Omaha Traffic Unit (402.444.5626) or your councilperson to request an audit of a dangerous intersection or area of road. Find your council person here.

    - Describe the location of the intersection and the problem, ie speeding, red-light running, stop-sign running, etc.

    - Make sure to check back in with your council member to find out the results of the audit.

    - We’d love you to share the results with SOS so that we can compile a comprehensive report of problem areas to provide to the city.

  • Per an Omaha Police Department representative:

“Calling 9-1-1 on a vehicle driving recklessly is encouraged. We do ask that the caller provide as much detailed information as possible. Direction of travel, license plate, description of the vehicle (make/model is very helpful), description of what the recklessness entails.”

Reserve any calls to 9-1-1 for dangerous driving that could cause a crash.
